“I found this gorgeous antique sampler in Pennsylvania and knew instantly I needed to reproduce it. It contained so many of my favorite elements – Adam and Eve, ships, cherubs, crowns, birds and a wonderful border. After three visits to the antique shop and a month of layaway payments(!), it came home with me. I began to reproduce it starting with the border, when a family emergency called me away from home for ten days. I sent the charted border to Beth Wiksen, my most understanding, flexible and skilled friend and stitcher. Beth set to work on the border and when I returned home, I got to work on the sampler interior. I got it to Beth as soon as I could and she started work on the interior. A family emergency called Beth away from home, so she stitched as fast as she possibly could, putting in 12-hour stitching days, and completed the sampler right before she needed to leave. To say I couldn’t done it without Beth is an understatement!
Our sampler is stitched on 40-Count Cocoa linen from Weeks Dye Works using Needlepoint Silks. Cross stitch is used throughout. Sixteen stitches are worked over one thread of linen, the rest over two threads of linen. Our frame was custom made at our local craft store.
