Scottish Thistle Mother of Pearl Thread Winder

So… this beautiful thread winder was a secret… until I accidentally posted a picture of my stitching with it on social media.  I intended to make it’s debut a bit later, but you all are loving it, and I’m happy to release it now!   It was a collaboration with Jackie du Plessis to bring you something with Thistles to celebrate our new shop home at the historic Zebulon H. Baird house in Woodfin, NC.

This area of North Carolina was heavily settled by Scottish immigrants in the late 1700s, and my family ancestors were part of that influx, along with the Baird family.  Zebulon Henry Baird descended from the original immigrants and built the house that we purchased for our shop home in 1878 (possibly as early as 1865) in the Victorian Folk Art Style.

The original railing on the front porch featured a thistle design in the balusters, as thistles are the Scottish National Flower, and they are also vey prevalent here in Western NC, making the Scots feel even more at home when they settled here.

We had to redesign the porch railings, as the originals were gone when we purchased the property, though we did have some photos.  We created a Thistle and a Shamrock interchanging baluster design, to honor both the Scottish and the Irish heritage of our ancestors and the original Baird family.

Check out Floss Tube video # 42 for a bit more info and some pictures.

We are so grateful to Jackie du Plessis for working with us on this design and for bringing all the gorgeous Mother of Pearl thread winders back to our modern  needlework community.  I hope you’ll collect them all, especially ours, and find treasured places in your needlework needfuls for them to reside and snuggle their way into the hands of future needleworkers.

This little beauty ships in its own protective plastic case inside another box.
