The Elizabeth West sampler is absolutely charming. An uplifting moral verse, or extract, is enclosed within a cartouche that is surrounded by distinctive Quaker motifs. Decorative fruit baskets, favorite tulips, rose bouquets and heartsease are a pleasure to see. A Queen stitched flower and strawberry flank the cartouche. Paired birds usually symbolize a “token or emblem of love” on Quaker samplers. Elizabeth West was born 28 July 1795 Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
